House program
The House program is where your child begins their soccer journey at Salt Spring United.
Designed for ages 4 - 10, this is where we introduce children to the sport and welcome them to our Club. Programs are designed to encourage learning and development via fun, teamwork and play. Coaches guide each age group and parents are encouraged to be involved.
All activities follow Soccer Canada's Grassroots Standards (see HERE for more information.)
Season & Structure
The House program runs alongside older age groups, following the same schedule (starting September and ending in April). While this continues over fall, winter and into spring, it is one season only and one registration covers the entire period.
Age groups and structure depend on registration numbers and may change each year. Some age groups combine to improve numbers and enjoyment.
-
At the U10 level, depending on registration numbers at U10 and U11 we may combine into a single at the U11 level. In this case U10 will move to our Youth program (travelling games) one year early. See the Youth section of this website for more information, or contact the Club for more information.
Practices
Sessions take place each week, typically on Saturday mornings at Portlock Park.
In winter we take a short break, plus move a block of training to indoor gym spaces.
In total each season includes approximately 22 sessions. The schedule will be similar to below (based on previous seasons). This is an EXAMPLE ONLY and final dates will be confirmed close to Season start:
-
Season starts: Sep 20 (training outdoors at Portlock Park)
-
Mid December: Winter break
-
February: Return to training, indoors in gym spaces
-
March - End of season: training shifts outdoors to Portlock Park
Below are practice times based previous seasons. This is an EXAMPLE ONLY and will be updated for season 2026/2027 based on registrations and pitch availability:
-
U4–U5 (combined boys + girls): 10:00–10:45am
-
U6–U7 (combined boys + girls): 10:00–11:00am
-
U8 (separate boys + girls): 11:15–12:15pm
-
U9–U10 (separate boys + girls): 11:00am - 12.00pm
Competitive guidelines
In line with Grassroots Standards, there are no competitive games at these age levels. Children are gradually introduced to the skills, rules and structure of the game over time. No scores are kept in game simulation activities. Competitive games begin when children reach the U11 age group.
What you need
Each year we provide a jersey as part of your registration fee.
Each child will require cleats and shin pads. These can be purchased from stores or online. Plus our Cleat Exchange is open during the season at Portlock Park and has limited supplies (you can drop old items and find replacements). Please ask your coach for details, or visit the Muddy Cleats Cafe for more information.
All other equipment, including balls used in sessions, is provided by the Club.
